Experimental. Experiential. Decolonial.
stitched! is a live journalism research and creative studio at the Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University. In partnership with the stitched! collective, the studio creates and presents works of journalism for live audiences. As an experimental space, stitched! also explores interdisciplinary collaborations by introducing artistic interventions into storytelling, including music and dance.
Our events are designed to give audiences a ‘cover-to-cover’ audio-visual experience, interacting with many of the elements of magazine storytelling, except unfolding live.
The studio was founded as a lab in 2019 by Sonya Fatah, associate professor at the School of Journalism. stitched! has produced several performances since its inception, including student-led works of live journalism and its shows have participated in festivals. In September 2023, the studio produced the second International Live Journalism Festival.
stitched! adopts a decolonized framework and is guided by principles of oral storytelling, indigenous to multiple global communities. The lab also adopts trauma-informed reporting practices, as well as a solidarity journalism approach, seeking to build community with audiences. This community focus informs our storytelling approach and interactive engagement.
stitched! shows end with calls to action that aim to provide audiences with purpose and agency, supporting the purpose of journalism within a democracy.
